Welcome
Congratulations! You've added a beautiful piece of fine hardwood to your kitchen. To keep your cutting board looking its best and ensure it remains durable for many years, here are some simple, essential care tips:
Protect and Nourish
Before the very first use, generously apply food-grade mineral oil to thoroughly nourish and protect the wood. This initial oiling step is essential, as it helps strengthen the fibers and build a protective natural patina over time, enhancing both durability and appearance. At MAISON RODIN, we intentionally avoid chemical sealants like varnishes, making your board completely safe for food preparation but initially very vulnerable to moisture. Proper early nourishment is crucial to help protect it against immediate moisture damage, such as warping or cracking.
Gentle and Effective Cleaning
During your board's first few uses, it’s particularly important to avoid washing it altogether. Minimal exposure to sudden or excessive water can immediately warp or crack the board at this delicate stage. Simply wipe it clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth, promptly removing any residues or liquids.
If hand washing becomes absolutely necessary (though not advisable), use only a minimal amount of mild soap with lukewarm water, quickly washing and rinsing your board. Always wash both sides of the board, regardless of visible dirt, to ensure balanced moisture distribution. This balanced approach helps prevent warping. After washing, immediately dry the board thoroughly with a towel and store it upright for good air circulation.
To disinfect and remove odors naturally, use a simple yet effective technique: sprinkle coarse salt generously on the board surface and rub it in with half a lemon, squeezing gently to release the juice. Finish by wiping clean with a slightly damp cloth.
Smooth Maintenance Routine
Occasionally, moisture exposure or regular use might cause the wood fibers to swell slightly, giving the board a rough feel. Smooth the affected areas gently with fine sanding paper (240–300 grit) to restore comfort and usability. After sanding, reapply mineral oil or care cream generously to reseal and strengthen the wood surface. This quick and simple maintenance routine will protect your board, making it resistant to future damage and ensuring its long-term performance.
Enjoy the Journey
With thoughtful care, your MAISON RODIN cutting board will age gracefully, developing a unique character that beautifully captures your culinary journey.
